Dick questions whether certain studios get preferential treatment, exposes the discrepancies in how the MPAA views sex and violence, and reveals the association's efforts to control culture. Interviewees include John Waters, Darren Aronofsky, Maria Bello, Atom Egoyan, Kevin Smith and more.
008- Red Corner
An American businessman (Richard Gere) finds himself charged with murder and thrown headfirst into China's nightmarish legal system in this thriller from director Jon Avnet. The director and his co-star, Bai Ling, filmed covertly in Beijing for a week without government approval. For the rest of the footage, production designer Richard Sylbert meticulously re-created the city on a Hollywood back lot, using hundreds of props imported from Beijing.
009- Platoon
A young, untested soldier (Charlie Sheen) steps off a troop transport in Vietnam and quickly learns that the first casualty of war is innocence. Writer-director Oliver Stone put himself on the Hollywood map (and won several Academy Awards) with this autobiographical account of his own tumultuous tour of duty in Vietnam. Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe excel as battle-hardened sergeants who offer Sheen starkly differing role models.
010- American Beauty
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) is struggling to endure marriage to uber-realtor Carolyn (Annette Bening), an unfulfilling career and a sullen teenage daughter (Thora Birch). Deep into a midlife crisis, Lester becomes infatuated with a friend (Mena Suvari) of his daughter. Soon, he's quit his job and is working at a fast-food joint in this dazzling blend of social satire and domestic tragedy from director Sam Mendes that scooped up five Oscars.
011- The Bridge on the River Kwai
Director David Lean's sweeping epic is set in a Japanese World War II prison camp where British POWs are forced to construct a railway bridge as a morale-building exercise. Yet the real battle of wills is between "play by the rules" British colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), who is dedicated to the project, and his American rival (William Holden), who vows to destroy it. The POWs' whistling work theme became legendary.
012- Patton
Gen. George S. Patton (George C. Scott) earned the nickname "Blood and Guts" for his determination on the battlefield. This epic-scale production follows the commander as he guides his troops across Africa and Europe, illuminating a man whose life was defined by war. Director Franklin J. Schaffner's multiple Oscar winner is a character study masquerading as a World War II film, with astonishing combat scenes and reflection on Patton's inner life.
013- Casino Royale
Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) directs this film adaptation (the 21st of the Bond franchise) of Ian Fleming's first novel. Daniel Craig debuts as the new Bond who takes on a corrupt financier (Mads Mikkelsen) in a showdown of Texas Hold 'Em. You'll learn Bond's back story as the action-packed film takes you to the Bahamas, Madagascar and other exotic locales. Eva Green stars as Vesper Lynd, and the sublime Judi Dench reprises her role as M.

Though loyal to his country, Wilson begins to feel the job eroding his ideals, filling him with distrust and destroying his personal life.
021- Schindler's List
Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic won seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and is an unforgettable testament to the possibility of human goodness. Greedy factory owner Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson) was exploiting cheap Jewish labor, but in the midst of WWII became an unlikely humanitarian, losing his fortune by helping to save 1,100 Jews from Auschwitz.

Robert Redford and Brad Pitt reunite in this espionage thriller from director Tony Scott. On the verge of retiring from the CIA, veteran spy Nathan Muir (Redford) learns that his one-time protégé and close friend, Tom Bishop (Pitt), is a political prisoner sentenced to die in Beijing. Although their friendship has been marred by bad blood and resentment, Muir agrees to take on the most dangerous mission of his career and rescue Bishop.
027- Stranger than Fiction
As a novelist (Emma Thompson) struggles with how to kill off her main character, IRS auditor Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) begins hearing her narration in his head and realizes he must prevent his own death. Crick's world turns upside down, and it's a life-or-death situation as he tries to persuade best-selling author Kay Eiffel to change the ending of her novel. Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah lead the fine supporting cast.
028- Sin City
Murder, corruption and cover-ups are all part of Sin City's daily routine in this dark film that weaves three tales from Frank Miller's graphic novels. Marv (Mickey Rourke) is a psychotic outcast who seeks vengeance for Goldie's (Jaime King) murder; Dwight (Clive Owen) kills a cop and must cover it up; and nearly retired cop Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is accused of a crime he didn't commit. Benicio Del Toro, Jessica Alba and Rosario Dawson co-star.
029- Apocalypto
Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson moves on from biblical fare to tackle the end of the Mayan civilization in this gripping action-adventure set just before Spain's conquest of Mexico and Central America in the 16th century. When an invading force threatens his peaceful existence, a courageous native risks everything to protect his way of life -- even if it means leaving his beautiful mate and unborn child behind.
030- Primal Fear
When a blood-spattered altar boy (Ed Norton) is found running from a murder scene, his conviction seems certain. But when arrogant defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) steps in, the issue of the boy's possible guilt may be less important than winning the case. Based on the novel by William Diehl, this twisty thriller delivers a perfect police procedural with characters that are deeper than they appear.
031- Road to Perdition
Hit man Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), known in his 1930s Chicago world as The Angel of Death, is on the run after his wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and son are murdered. With his surviving son (Tyler Hoechlin) in tow, Michael sets out to exact brutal vengeance. Complicating matters in this crime actioner are a reporter (Jude Law), Al Capone's enforcer (Stanley Tucci) and other shady characters.
032- The Shipping News
Distraught after the disappearance of his estranged wife, Quoyle's (Kevin Spacey) long-lost aunt (Judi Dench) convinces him to move with his daughter to their ancestral home in Newfoundland. Here, where life is rough and secrets are many, Quoyle lands a job as a reporter for the local paper. Now, a past is emerging, a mystery is unfolding and life is awakening. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by E. Annie Proulx.
033- The Secret of NIMH
Based on the children's book Mrs. Brisby and the Rats of NIMH, director Don Bluth's animated adventure chronicles the trials of a widowed field mouse (voiced by Elizabeth Hartman) who must move her family-- including an ailing son -- to escape a farmer's plough. Aided by a crow (Dom DeLuise) and a colony of superintelligent escaped lab rats, the brave Mrs. Brisby struggles to move her home to firmer ground.
034- Finding Neverland
Peter Pan and the denizens of Neverland have captured the hearts and minds of J.M. Barrie's readers. But how did the imaginative author ever envision a world so wondrous yet perilous? Johnny Depp plays Barrie, a writer inspired by genius and dedicated to seeing his vision come to life onstage at the Duke of York's Theatre in 1904 London. Kate Winslet co-stars in this magical film that nabbed seven Oscar nominations and won Best Original Score.
035- Samurai Trilogy 1: Musashi Miyamoto
Starring Toshiro Mifune as Musashi Miyamoto, this first film in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy won a 1956 Honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Struggling to elevate himself from his low caste in 17th century Japan, Miyamoto trains to become a mighty samurai warrior; in the film's bracing climax Miyamoto finally gets a chance to prove himself. Parts II and III of the trilogy weren't released in the United States until 1967.
036- Samurai Trilogy 2: Duel at Ichijoji Temple
Valiant 17th century samurai Musashi Miyamoto (Toshirô Mifune) finds himself enveloped in conflict -- from a rivalry with a martial-arts school to a love triangle with two beautiful women (Kaoru Yachigusa and Mariko Okada). But nothing, not even an against-all-odds battle with 80 swordsmen, can shake his courage. The film is the second part of the acclaimed trilogy, whose first installment earned an honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
037- Samurai Trilogy 3: Duel at Ganryu Island
Seasoned warrior Musashi Miyamoto (Toshiro Mifune) must face off against his archrival, the young ambitious samurai Kojiro (Koji Tsurata), in this third and arguably best installment of director Hiroshi Inagaki's classic samurai trilogy. Fight highlights include a duel between the lance and wooden staff, as well as a matchup between an unarmed Musashi and three bandits. Kaoru Yachigusa and Mariko Okada co-star as the women in Musashi's life.
038- 50 First Dates
Henry (Adam Sandler) is a player skilled at seducing women. But when this veterinarian meets Lucy (Drew Barrymore), he realizes it's possible to fall in love all over again … and again, and again. That's because the delightful Lucy has no short-term memory, so Henry must woo her day after day until he finally sweeps her off her feet. Costars Sean Astin, Dan Aykroyd and Rob Schneider.

Stars Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz and Boris Leskin. Liev Schreiber directs. Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer.
042- Ghost Rider
In this hell-on-wheels thriller, Nicolas Cage stars as Johnny Blaze, a badass stunt cyclist who makes a Faustian bargain with the sinister Mephisto (Peter Fonda) to save a loved one. Years later, he offers Johnny the chance to reclaim his soul by vanquishing Blackheart (Wes Bentley) -- Mephisto's archenemy and son, who's scheming to depose his pop. The supporting cast includes Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott and Donal Logue.
043- Accepted
After receiving rejection letters from eight colleges, Bartleby Gaines (Justin Long) and his slacker friends fool their parents into thinking they've been accepted at the South Harmon Institute of Technology, a university of their own invention. The only problem is, the boys have somehow managed to attract a freshman class of rejects just like them. Can the South Harmon coeds compete in a battle of wits with students from a neighboring college?
044- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Petty thief Harry Lockart (Robert Downey Jr.) gets caught up in a murder investigation in this action-packed comedy. Posing as an actor, Harry heads to Los Angeles for an unlikely audition and finds an authentic acting coach in detective Perry Van Shrike (Val Kilmer). But the bright lights of Hollywood fade when a murder takes place and Harry, Perry and Harry's high school dream girl (Michelle Monaghan) become part of the investigation.
045- 16 Blocks
Tasked with escorting chatty prosecution witness Eddie Bunker (rapper and seasoned actor Mos Def) from police custody to a nearby courthouse, aging New York City cop Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) reluctantly gears up for the 16-block trek. But with powerful forces intent on keeping them from reaching their destination, they'll be lucky to make it there alive. David Morse co-stars in director Richard Donner's action thriller.

Zack Snyder directs this faithful adaptation of Frank Miller's (Sin City) graphic novel about the storied Battle of Thermopylae, a conflict that pitted the ancient Greeks against the Persians in 480 B.C. The film, which blends live-action shots with virtual backgrounds to capture Miller's original vision, co-stars Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Vincent Regan, Rodrigo Santoro and Dominic West.
047- Raise the Red Lantern
After her father's death, 19-year-old Songlian (Gong Li) marries the much older Chen Zuoqian, becoming the latest concubine in Chen's burgeoning harem. As the fourth wife, Songlian finds herself at the bottom of an oppressive hierarchy, in which competition for the master's attention -- and the attendant privileges it carries -- is intense. This lushly filmed drama was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and won a BAFTA Award in the same category.
048- Transformers: The Movie
The Autobots, those shape-shifting Saturday-morning superheroes, make their way to the big screen to defend the universe against the evil Decepticons. With the loss of their revered leader, Optimus Prime, the Autobots must destroy Megatron and his evil warriors -- newly transformed into even deadlier fighting machines by the giant killer planet Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles) -- before he destroys their world.
049- Iron Monkey
Hiyaaah! Quentin Tarantino (the writer-director behind Pulp Fiction) retranslated, rescored and subtitled an unintentionally campy Golden Harvest action movie that dates back to 1993. Tarantino's tampering makes the story easier to follow, and that's probably a blessing. But what's also a blessing is the great fight choreography and mind-bending wire-fu acrobatics, which remain intact.
050- Stardust
A young man journeys to a magical world to win the heart of his true love in this charming fantasy based on Neil Gaiman's novel. Tristan (Charlie Cox) has promised Victoria (Sienna Miller) that he'll retrieve a fallen star to secure her love. Along the way, he battles a pirate named Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro), an evil witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) and other assorted goblins and ghosts. Peter O'Toole, Claire Danes and Rupert Everett co-star.
051- Fracture
Anthony Hopkins stars in this legal thriller as Ted Crawford, a man who allegedly attempted to murder his wife and is now locked in a battle of wits with an assistant district attorney, Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling). The D.A.'s convinced Crawford has blood on his hands, but Crawford is freed on a technicality, sending Beachum on an obsessive mission to prove Crawford's guilt -- even if he has to bend the law to make his case.

The globe-trotting action film, based on a video game, was shot on location in Bulgaria, South Africa, Istanbul, St. Petersburg and London.
062- Mystic River
Three childhood friends, Sean (Kevin Bacon), Dave (Tim Robbins) and Jimmy (Sean Penn) are reunited in Boston 25 years later when they are linked together in the murder investigation of Jimmy's daughter. This taut thriller from director Clint Eastwood won two acting Oscars (for Robbins and Penn) and was nominated for several more in its exploration of human behavior when faced with pain just beneath the surface, justified rage and scars that never heal.
063- Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
After their parents are tragically killed, three young orphans -- Violet (Emily Browning), Klaus (Liam Aiken) and Sunny -- are taken in by the cunning and dastardly Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who hopes to snatch their inheritance from them. Based on the series of best-selling, darkly funny children's books, director Brad Silberling's film co-stars Meryl Streep, Billy Connolly and Timothy Spall. Jude Law narrates as Lemony Snicket.
064- Superman Returns
After a multiyear hiatus from Metropolis, Superman (played by Brandon Routh and Stephan Bender) returns to find a city that's managed to survive without him, an old flame (Kate Bosworth) who's moved on and an old enemy (Kevin Spacey) who wants him destroyed. Parker Posey, Eva Marie Saint, Peta Wilson and Marlon Brando (through the magic of archival footage) co-star in this long-awaited installment of the superhero saga.

083- Transformers: Season 1
Over the years, The Transformers -- the cartoon with action figures that were "more than meets the eye" -- has gained a huge following. The show's action sequences were artfully (and often playfully) animated, featuring robots who fight and morph into other, more advantageous shapes as each new situation arises.
